Campaign Suspended

No, not talking about John McCain temporarily suspending campaigning.

Talking about the mainstream media temporarily suspending their "Give Obama a Tongue Bath 24x7" campaign just long enough to lick their chops over the recent developments, hoping they spell doom for McCain.

Too early to tell how exactly how this will affect the presidential race, we'll have a better idea a week from now as we see how things play out.

It does give us a good, possibly unprecedented, side-by-side opportunity to observe how both candidates for president act in a real crisis.

Buddy can you spare a dime???

What I was told in B-School is one of the primary causes of the Great Depression was a liquidity crisis, that could have been averted had the Federal Reserve (i.e. the government) acted quickly.

Now we get to test that hypothesis. We have a liquidity crisis, the government is (maybe) going to act quickly and decisively.

Fire Chris Cox

John McCain has said if he were president today he'd fire Chris Cox (as reported in the Washington Post, 9/18/08 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/18/AR2008091801750.html

And why not? The fine details of whether Cox can actually be fired (the president surely could ask for his resignation) or whether he's a "fall guy" are somewhat beside the point.

While the general sentiment seems to be that Cox is not guilty of malfeasance (doing bad), and maybe not of misfeasance (screwing up), the case for nonfeasance (not doing his job) is pretty good by the logic of  "It blew up on your watch, ergo you are responsible." Not fair maybe, but happens all the time in the "real world."

If rules were actually being violated, like for naked short-selling, it would mean wasn't doing his job and should be replaced.

Knowing that they don't have cushy sinecures for years, if not for life, might focus the attention of the heads of these "semi-autonomous feudal states" (props to Monty Python for the phrase).

How are you going to spend your rebate?

The One is promising another rebate to be paid for with a windfall profits tax on the oil companies. He says we hard-scrabble peons need it to help pay for gas and groceries.

Leave aside for another time the question of why can't we have a windfall gas tax revenue rebate where we get back the extra taxes we pay because of the increase in the price of gas.

The assumption seems to be if all us little folk have an extra 1000 or so to spend, we'll spend it and stimulate the economy. Plus we need it just to get by.

Well, that's right, we do need it to get by. Don't know about you but how I spent my last rebate was I used it to help pay my property taxes.

Maybe if our taxes weren't so high we wouldn't need a gift check from the US Treasury.

Palin's Shaky Credentials

Buzz around the net & the talkers is that the Dems have released a side-by-side of the educational credentials of the candidates.

Needless to say The One shines in all his effulgent spendor with his degrees from Harvard & wherever. Palin is criticized here and elsewhere for going to multiple no-name schools located in flyover country.

Yet another reason to like Palin. She scrabbled through school the hard way, like many of us, and didn't have her innate common sense marred by the indoctrination and conditioning she would have been exposed to at a "name" school.

Wasn't it William F. Buckley who said something to the effect that he'd rather be goverened by the first 100 people listed in the Boston phone book than the faculty of Harvard University?
